Next.js vs WordPress for Small Businesses: Which Should You Choose?
A plain-English comparison of Next.js and WordPress for small business websites — speed, SEO, editing, security, cost and when to choose each.

Short answer: choose WordPress if a non-technical team will publish a lot of content and you want the widest choice of plugins at a moderate budget. Choose Next.js if speed, custom features or integrations with other systems matter most, or if the site is also the front of a web app. Both can rank well on Google when built properly.
We build on both, so this is not a sales pitch for one of them.
What is the difference between Next.js and WordPress?
WordPress is a content management system: an all-in-one package with an admin panel, themes and tens of thousands of plugins. Most small business websites in India run on it.
Next.js is a framework for building websites and web apps with React. It is not a CMS by itself — developers build the site, and content usually comes from a separate "headless" CMS or from files.
Side-by-side comparison
| WordPress | Next.js | |
|---|---|---|
| Editing | Familiar admin panel | Needs a headless CMS for non-developers |
| Speed | Good if built lean; plugins slow it down | Very fast by default (static + server rendering) |
| SEO | Strong with Rank Math / Yoast | Strong; metadata and schema built in code |
| Custom features | Plugins, or custom PHP | Anything — it is a full application framework |
| Security | Most hacks come from outdated plugins | Small attack surface, no plugin ecosystem |
| Hosting | Managed WordPress hosting | Vercel or any Node host; often cheap |
| Upfront cost | Lower | Medium to higher |
| Who can maintain it | Many freelancers | Developers who know React |
When is WordPress the better choice?
- You publish blogs or news several times a week.
- Several staff members will edit pages.
- You need a feature that an established plugin already does well (events, LMS, memberships).
- The budget is tight and the site is mainly informational.
The catch: WordPress stays fast and secure only if someone keeps plugins minimal and updated. Page builders like Elementor make editing easy but add a lot of weight. Our WordPress development uses lightweight block themes for that reason.
When is Next.js the better choice?
- Speed is a competitive advantage — for example, landing pages for paid ads.
- The site needs custom logic: calculators, booking flows, portals, dashboards.
- You want the marketing site and a web app to share one codebase.
- You want very low maintenance and almost nothing to patch.

What about SEO?
Google does not rank a platform; it ranks pages. Both platforms can produce fast, well-structured pages with correct titles, headings and structured data. In practice, Next.js sites tend to score higher on Core Web Vitals out of the box, while WordPress sites need more care to get there.
What about cost over three years?
WordPress usually costs less upfront but more in maintenance — updates, plugin licences, security fixes. Next.js costs more upfront but often less to run. Over three years, the totals are frequently closer than the first quote suggests. Our website cost guide for Delhi breaks down the numbers.
Our recommendation
For most local businesses — a clinic, a coaching institute, a CA firm — a well-built WordPress site or a simple Next.js site will both do the job. Decide based on who will edit the site and whether you will need custom features in the next two years. If you are unsure, ask us and we will recommend one in writing with the reasons.
